Charlie - The Great Masquerade
Charlie they've been calling out
To you for sometime now
You've been hiding in the stores
To see if they would care at all
Have you been playing hard to get?
Is that what you want or just another death?
You say
" People stay and people leave
Don't you say you know what's best for me"
Your heart belongs to every ocean you have sailed
To find a way from it all
You say, "People stay and people leave
Don't you say you know what's best for me
I'm quiet inside and I just wonder
If it all was a waste of time
I pushed my limits, let it rain
Took this dimwit of a past I never reclaimed
But people stay and people leave
Don't you say you know what's best for me"
You cry in Shakespearean anecdotes
Draw in the thought of an afterlife
That couldn't possibly disappoint you more
Left bitter in the midst of nothing at all
And just for the better split of a second
You had the best one month of your life
If all your prudence was the objection
Playing dumb was the twist of a rusted knife
You may never tell me the whole story
Afraid that I might pick the wrong sides
But Charlie I see you tearing up at dinner
Whisper "What if he was the love of my life?"
You can't eulogize the life of a river that never flowed
But you grieve the memory of the sunsets you wished you'd known
"What do I do? Stare through the holes in my roof?
And long for star who was just like you?
I've been pondering relentlessly
Did I encourage his complacency?
I'm moonlighting as an artist
Painting sapphire waterfalls that wash away his memory"
Charlie they know it wasn't a fair fight
You had the taste of a misery that hurt your right
But people stay and they turn out the lights
When their Sun just gets a little too bright.
