ethel wanderess
Ethel knew all along I was tied to the mystery
She told me all the places she'd been to in misery
Wanderess, she spent all her summers on a Ferris wheel
Stuck in looping time, she's been waiting for an epiphany
Ethel knew I spent the whole night dancing alone
"I was waiting for you to ask me to dance just so I could refuse"
I say I'm so important, she's been playing with my feelings
And even if it's just cruelty at least she chose me
Ethel said she didn't believe in fleeting affection
Staring through the stained glass was her pulsation
I knew how far it would take me if I looked beyond my senses
So I said yes anyway because what if I was the exception
Ethel had a feeling she said she was starting to trust
I swallowed her disdain like a silent punch in the gut
I can't run away, I don't have what it takes to start over
And you can only hate someone you loved once before
Ethel spent all her money on a vintage black Maybach
Drove half-way across the country and turned back
Early December, the snow had just begin to settle
Agoraphobic, now stuck in my season's defenses
Ethel knows I love being left behind
Waiting by the phone to see if she remembers me every night
I hold one half of the key that's been turned just right
Take me with you, let this be the reparation I've been denied
Ethel knew all along which strings she could pull
I answered every call like the tide reaches for the moon
Wanderess, she's so far down the arching interstate
Phantom kissed me goodbye and I never saw her again.
