The Blackbird - The Fall of the Blackbird

Dawn was just beginning to set in
The warmth of the sun poured into my chambers
I stared up at the gilded ceiling
Bare backed against my silk sheets

For a moment there was peace
And it burned into furious ashes
Lined the souls of my feet
Crimson footprints followed me since

I tried to take no notice of the dreary whispers that led me here
Rivers dried up and mountains weren't high enough so I drowned alone on the ship
The blood moon couldn't do what it needed to do
Call a warning saying all I had I would lose
But when the blackbird soared across the sky
I had a momentary glimpse of my afterlife
I tried to trust my gut but being nervous all the time can lead you to misjudge the signs

We sailed to another island
Sought asylum and it lasted for a second
Sun burnt and I saw in the smoke the distance
Between me and my birthright, an illicit kinship

Impending doom starts to show in the early hours
I still feel like a child learning how to walk
I still see her in every place I find comfort
Underneath the bed and in between the walls

I tried to take no notice of the gray sky looming over me
I folded like a deck of cards feeding on my luck and let the air suffocate me
For a moment there was nothing and it felt like everything
When the blackbird soared across the sapphire sky
I had a glimpse of a possible afterlife
I trusted my vision, my mind and my gut and sacrificed all affection I had for my kingdom

Being underestimated loosened the noose around my neck
My intelligence was ridiculed by friends who fed on my inheritance
Their treachery never surprised me but confirmed my seeding doubts
My brother who sat at the bottom of the food chain, rose to the ultimate summit
But soon clipped his own wings along with the others out of fear of a plummet

I tried to take no notice of the absence of luxury
My callouses were enough to expose my incompetency
Once I was a king, gilded glamour was the only thing worth living for
When the blackbird in my soul spread its wings I should've known
That swimming back to my homeland in search of a way up those castle stairwells
Would leave me a ghost laying blood soaked on that four poster bed.
