Cruel World- Stories From the Afterlife

What could I have done
To make you change your mind
A false sense of security
Is understandably a lie

It never occurred to me
That I was your safety net
I'm sorry I took it down
And made you plunge to your death

I know you waited on me
At the airport every night
I didn't have the heart to show up
Now I'm the cause of your plight

You're a picture perfect damsel in distress
And it's a cruel world, I built all by myself

What could I have done
To dilute my toxicity
You didn't like all the things I loved for you
And that made me so angry

It never occurred to me
To ask you what you want
I made false assumptions
No one but me is at fault

I know you waited on me
At the airport every night
I didn't have the heart to show up
Now I'm the cause of your plight

You're a picture perfect, damsel in distress
And it's a cruel world, I built all by myself

I look at you and I go down a rabbit hole thinking
There's that shoulder that used to freeze my tears till they were bolder
There's that smirk that used to show up like an epiphany out of nowhere
There's that demeanor whitewashed against the blue walls
So imperfectly in sync and obvious like free fall
There's that mansion that has now left me homeless
And there's that hand I bit while it fed me the only kindness
I will ever know was true

It never occurred to me
How repulsive I was
I owe you everything
For accepting every flaw

I know you waited on me
On the airport every night
I didn't have the heart to show up
Now I'm the cause of your plight

You're a picture perfect, damsel in distress
And it's a cruel world, I built all by myself.
